NEW YORK - One person is dead after a group was pulled from the Hudson River in Manhattan Thursday night.

Police say around 8:45 p.m. a man jumped into the river near West 11th Street in the West Village to retrieve a personal item.

Three others jumped in to try to save him.

The fire department rescued those three.

The man who initially jumped in was pulled out of the water by police.

He was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest and later died.

The three survivors did not require medical assistance beyond the initial rescue.
