NEW YORK - A destroyed synagogue on the Lower East Side that was landmarked in 1967 may soon lose its landmark status.

Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol on Norfolk Street burned down in 2017 after having closed its doors a decade earlier.

It was the first American temple established by immigrants from the Russian Empire.

It was also the oldest Russian Orthodox house of worship in the country.

The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission preliminarily voted in favor of rescinding its landmark status, saying the property no longer possesses architectural, historic, or cultural significance.

The commission will hold a public hearing and then take a final vote.

Developers already have filed paperwork to build on the site.
