NEW YORK - In a decision that could pave the way for Broadway and other theater productions in the city, The Metropolitan Opera says it is postponing the start of its season from September to December 31.
In an exclusive interview with NY1, Met general manager Peter Gelb says the size and scope of productions make it impossible to safely return during the pandemic.
"The Met is one of the busiest performing arts companies if not the busiest in the entire world: Dressers backstage, stage hands in the wings, an orchestra filling the pits, hundreds of chorus members and ballet dancers, actors and singers on the stage, the world's greatest singers," said Gelb. "It's like a city and it's very sad to see that city quiet at the moment."
To further increase safety, The Met will move up its evening curtain times to 7 p.m. whenever possible.
It's also considering shortening some performances.
