Bruce Barish is the owner of Ernest Winzer Cleaners, a mainstay of the Broadway community.
"We've been in business for 112 years, so we've seen a lot already. So we're not going anywhere. We do all of Broadway and some of off-Broadway, so we probably do somewhere between 30 and 40 shows a week if the houses are open, and it could be hundreds to thousands of costumes. I've been doing it my whole life. You know, I feel a part of the community. A couple of years ago we were honored to be a part of that community and it's been a lot of fun,” said Bruce Barish, Owner of Ernest Winzer Cleaners.
But these past few days haven’t been the most joyous. Barish's business has really felt the effect of Broadway’s current shutdown. "I would say it's a 75% hit in our sales," said Barish of the financial impact.
Barish's company has gotten through other difficult times in the city like 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, but worries this Coronavirus shutdown may cause the worst impact.
"I don't think we've ever seen anything like this. I mean, 9/11 obviously happened on a Tuesday morning, so we had a lot of shows here already that were already in the works. But we've done, you know, Hurricane Sandy we got inundated with road tours that got flooded. I mean all kinds of crazy things. But I don't think I've ever seen anything in my lifetime where, you know, potentially right now we're shut down for about a month," said Barish.
For the time being, Barish offered a hopeful sentiment: "Like everybody else, we're monitoring it day by day. You know, I felt pretty confident that we would get through this week, I'm not sure if we will or won't. I'm hoping to get into next week at some point. My health knows, you know, we might have to just pull the plug and everybody might have to sit out for a little while. But you know, once everything's up and running again, I mean, we'll be back. We're not going to go anywhere."
