QUEENS, N.Y. - Some Queens community members are taking action against a recent spike in violent crimes in their neighborhood.

Ozone Park residents gathered Thursday night to see what can be done to lower the crime rate, after a man was attacked and robbed last weekend.

This was just the most recent incident in what local leaders are calling a crime wave.

Some of the ideas floated were more police patrols, surveillance cameras, and better lighting on the streets.

The community is also starting a civilian patrol.

"The community can have a face that it can interact with. And it can rely on us with whatever they need. Just like this incident that we gathered here for," said Mohammed Khan of the Cityline Ozone Park Civilian Patrol.

"We want police officers there at all times so if we can get state police to come down and patrol city line area that’s more police presence," said State Assemblyman Mike Miller.

No arrests have been made in that robbery.

The victim had multiple bones broken in his face and suffered brain damage.
