After 5 months of training, the NYPD graduated 10 canines and their handlers to join the department’s Canine Team. The dogs will work in the Special Operations Bureau, overseen by the Emergency Service Unit.

One of the handlers, Officer Katrina Narvaez, said she wanted to be a part of the canine unit since she was child, according to the department’s Tweet. She named her new canine partner "Freddy" after her father, Lieutenant Federico Narvaez. Lt. Narvaez was shot and killed in the line of duty in 1996 when he was trying to make an arrest. He was 40 years old.

Six of the dogs from Wednesday’s graduation were named in honor of departed service members.
