Drivers for FedEx and other delivery companies have never been busier thanks to a surge in online shopping. But now, something is happening that is giving those drivers pause: goody baskets left on porches across Staten Island, and the country.
"They're usually very happy, very happy,” Gwen Tomaselli of Dongan Hills tells NY1. “It puts a smile on their face, which is the purpose. Makes them feel appreciated."
Filled with snacks and sweets, peanuts and water, the baskets often come with signs. "Thank you for all you do. Please take a snack or two," one reads. Another reads, "With all you do, this snacks for you!"
It's a small way to thank the men and women working to deliver packages on time, especially before Christmas.
"I get packages starting at 7 o'clock in the morning until 11 o'clock at night. So they're really hustling,” says Lisa Bova-Hiatt, who leaves snacks on her porch. “So, just a nice little way to say ‘thank you,’ and be kind. People have just really taken to it."
It all began with a Facebook page Bova- Hiatt created several years ago, called “Random Acts of Kindness.”
It began with just 50 followers and now has nearly 11,000 from 99 countries all over the world.
“Last year, a woman posted a picture of a basket she prepared for delivery people in her neighborhood... and the idea took off," says Bova-Hiatt.
In one home surveillance video, a postal worker delivering mail pauses and appears notice the basket, He approaches the porch, and just beyond the camera's range he stops where the basket, then returns to his truck.
"Nuts are very popular, and the fruit snacks, these belvita bites. Nobody really liked the Kashi," says Bova-Hiatt.
One video from Delaware of an Amazon worker's reaction went viral this month. The driver is heard reacting, "Ah this is nice! Ah this is sweet! Get out of here!"
The driver does a happy dance down the driveway, evidence of how a small act of kindness can go a long way.
