Uber's first safety report found that more than 3,000 sexual assaults were reported by its drivers and riders in the U.S. last year.

The company released its report yesterday after years of criticism over its safety record.

Of the sexual assaults reported, Uber says 235 were rapes.

Hundreds more involved incidents of groping or unwanted kissing.

Uber also says nine people were murdered during Uber rides in 2018, and 58 died in auto-related crashes.

The company points out that Uber riders took more than three million trips a day during the period when it was compiling the safety numbers.

It also noted that the vast majority of its rides had no reported safety issues.

Uber has partnered with sexual assault prevention networks and other groups to improve rider safety.

It says it will release a new safety report every two years.
