CHARLOTTE, N.C. - City leaders, designers, and groups funding the Rail Trail Bridge had a groundbreaking of sorts Tuesday afternoon.
Instead of using shovels, Mayor Vi Lyles and others did their best to mark the occasion in cement.
Right now, the bridge site is going through early foundation work and soil testing to figure out the best spot to put the footings.
There are two potential designs for the $11 million project.
“With the aesthetics that push boundaries a little bit and make it something iconic and unique to the city of Charlotte,” lead designer Ivan Depena says.
The city expects to have the final design by spring 2020 and the project finished by 2023.
Right now, it’s still taking public input. You can take an online survey here.
