With the holidays upon us, millions of people come to New York City to marvel at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and the holiday displays along Fifth Avenue and now Mayor de Blasio announces a pedestrian zone to curb congestion in the area.

"There's a congestion problem so we're acting on it. We are going to have street closures in the area of Rockefeller Center and that's going to start next Friday. We'll have a pedestrian zone created. We'll be closing off 49th Street and 50th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues much of the day," said de Blasio.

Transit President Andy Byford wasn’t happy with the mayor’s decision to restrict traffic.

In a statement, Byford said the plan “gives no priority to MTA buses and ignores the needs of bus customers.”

De Blasio says the lane closures will take place for much of the day but not the entire day, and the NYPD will have the option to open lanes up on 5th avenue if there isn't a lot of pedestrian traffic.

The pedestrian zone will last from November 29th through just past January First for the holiday season.
