NEW YORK - Before they hit the stage at Radio City for opening night the Rockettes rehearse six hours a day, six days a week for six weeks to make sure every move is perfect for the annual Christmas Spectacular.
The iconic holiday tradition began in 1933 as a 30-minute live performance. Today, the Rockettes awe audiences for 90 minutes performing numbers like the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and of course, the troupe's signagture kick line.
"Every year we come in and learn the steps we are bringing a fresh approach to it as well," said Sarah Wenstrom, a Rockette.
There are 80 Rockettes, divided into two casts of 40 dancers. Creative Director Karen Keele performed as a Rockette for fourteen seasons.
"You know I always say the individuality of these women those little pieces make the line magical and special, and there's something profound in the fact that this line has never existed before," Keele said.
I quickly learned why the Rockettes need to be in top physical shape. They each do more than 300 kicks per show.
And it's even harder than it looks. Precision is key.
Though it's clear I won't be joining the dance troupe anytime soon, you can see them in action from November 8 through January 5.
