NEW YORK - The New York City Police Department is dealing with two shootings involving police, one deadly, that happened just hours apart late Tuesday night.
In the Bronx, police say they received a call for a man firing shots on the 2 and 5 train platform at the East 225th White Plains station.
They encountered the 27-year-old armed man just after midnight.
It is unclear if the suspect fired at the officers, but they say they shot him in the shoulder.
"Several plain clothed and uniform officers from the 47 precinct responded to the scene and we were directed to the southbound platform where the engaged the male in possession of a firearm. Two of the officers then fired several rounds striking him one time in the left shoulder," said NYPD Assistant Chief Commanding Officer Larry Nikunen.
A semi-automatic gun was recovered at the scene.
Police say the suspect has an extensive criminal history.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where he is stable.
Two officers were also transported for evaluation.
A man was killed in a separate police-involved shooting Tuesday night in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.
The NYPD says two plainclothes officers were on patrol at the Gowanus Houses when they came across a shooting in progress.
They identified themselves as police and told the gunman to drop his weapon.
When he refused, investigators say the officers fired multiple rounds, hitting the man several times.
A 9 millimeter handgun was recovered at the scene.
Investigators say the man who was shot had just been released from prison after serving time for robbery.
The officers were not hurt.
