Friends and family of Karina Vetrano are hitting the track to celebrate her life. Her father kicking of a fundraising event Saturday by stepping in her shoes.
This is the third year Molloy High School in Briarwood held a walkathon to honor former student Karina Vetrano, who was murdered in August 2016, while jogging in Howard Beach. This memorial comes a few months after Chanel Lewis was convicted of killing Karina.
Her dad, Phil Vetrano, wearing her shoes says the day is all about celebrating her life and running for her, while school officials remember what a special student she was.
“It is a great tribute to Karina, for all of these people to show up, go out of their way and to come and to celebrate Karina’s life. That’s what it’s about today, celebrating Karina’s life.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit students through the Karina Vetrano Memorial Scholarship. In the past three years more than $175,000 has been raised.
