For one final time Batman and Superman will greet the patrons at Gotham City Lounge.
“It was bar but it also felt like a community center,” said one patron.
After 16 years in business the comic book and superhero themed dive bar is closing its doors.
“It is a little rough, this is one of the places I always used to come to,” said another patron.
The bar has been in owner Ray Torrelles family for generations.
His grandmother used the space for a community church back in 70s.
But Torrelles admits opening up the watering hole was not his first choice.
“My wife wanted to do a bar, I wanted to do a comic book shop so we kind of combined forces,” said owner, Ray Torrelles.
Over the years Gotham City Lounge has become a staple in the community.
Patrons say it was a place they could quote geek out about comics, while being surrounded by memorabilia from some of their favorites.
Torrelles says much of it comes from his own collection and others who donated.
“A lot of things were donated by people who came to the bar,” Torrelles said.
According to Torrelles, development and the changing demographic of people moving to the neighborhood became the kryptonite to business at Gotham City Lounge.
“Since the city has been gentrified and I don’t think it is what the neighborhood wants anymore,” Torrelles added.
Aside from the three dollar beers and cheap games of pool, customers say what they will miss the most is what they call the “Gotham Family.”
Torrelles said another bar will not replace Gotham City Lounge. Instead, it will act as his man cave, and he'll be sure to invite back his regulars.
