Students and teachers wore purple tee shirts, sweatshirts and ribbons at PS 29 on Thursday. It’s the school where 37-year-old Jeanine Cammarata was a substitute teacher.
Purple is the color of support for domestic violence victims. Police say Cammarata was killed by her estranged husband.
"Jeanine was powerful. She was extremely mighty. Her smile was infectious. She was quiet, but she was funny,” says Linda Manfredi, the principal of PS 29. “She would tell stories and do things and she was extremely well received here."
Investigators have not alleged how or where Jeanine Cammarata was killed, but they said the teacher and her husband, Michael, were going through a bitter divorce and custody battle at the time of her death. The case has drawn new attention to the problem of domestic violence.
“All over this city, you see people taking a stand against domestic violence, wearing purple symbols to send a message of solidarity with all survivors of domestic violence, but also to show our resolve to take on this courage," said Mayor de Blasio on Thursday.
Michael Cammarata and his girlfriend, Ayisha Egea, were charged last week with second degree murder, tampering with evidence and concealing a body.
They appeared in court on Thursday, but did not look at each other.
Cammarata kept his head down and Egea, six months pregnant with their baby, stared straight ahead.
At the hearing, the district attorney's office declined to reveal the specific offenses a local grand jury indicted them on. That brought a bitter objection from defense attorneys, who demanded to know before applying for bail. But a judge ruled the prosecution is not required to reveal the substance of the indictment just yet.
“The very fact that those questions would not be answered by the DA office leads me to believe that my client has not been indicted for murder in the second degree,” said Mark Fonte, Egea’s attorney. “Very simple if my client was indicted for murder in the second degree, the DA would have said so.”
Cammarata and Egea are due back in court in two weeks.
