It was once the largest grocer in the Northeast...

Before its parent company A &P declared bankruptcy for second time four years ago.

"Come to this location because you can walk here, then they took it away and put something else in" said East Flatbush resident Joan Alexander-Bakiriddin.

Now the familiar Pathmark name and logo are back, returning to their former site on Albany Avenue, which had been a Pathmark store for 47 years.

A former rival, Allegiance Retail Services purchased the rights to the Pathmark name.

It operates 120 supermarkets — including D'Agostinos and Gristedes — in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

"We thought the city where Pathmark had very good business would be the right place to reintroduce the Pathmark brand," said John Derderian the CEO of Allegiance Retail Services.

Its return to the remodeled store is welcomed news for residents who remember the grocer living up to one of its old slogans.."fresh for less."

They say that after this Pathmark closed, they had to travel more than mile to shop at the next closest supermarket.

"We have a lot of residents that are seniors who don't drive and that has become an issue for them to get quality food," adds Hazel Martinez.

The Brooklyn site will act as a test site for Allegiance Retail Services, to see whether or not re-opening Pathmarks at other locations is good for business. The reopening also means as many as 150 new jobs for this neighborhood.
