A crash came through the window, shattering the glass just feet away from where Rabbi Menachem Heller says children were playing and his wife was with their baby.

Police say two vandals broke the front window of the Chabad of Bushwick synagogue around 2 a.m. on  Saturday.

“It sounded a little bit like an explosion. Like a boom, like a really loud boom,” Rabbi Heller said.

Rabbi Heller says about 15 people were here when it happened, including 6 kids. They were spending time together after Friday night’s Shabbat dinner, a religious observance.

The dark night prevented the rabbi from getting a good look at the two people who broke the synagogue window.

“We saw them walking away, and we felt safer, so we ran across to get help,” Rabbi Heller said.

As part of the religious observance, the rabbi didn’t have a phone, so he had to run across the street to Dunkin’ Donuts for help.

He says in 10 years, nothing like this has ever happened.

“It’s hurts. It’s very painful. We’ve been here for such a long time and never had anything like that happen,” Rabbi Heller said. “And to think this could happen here is frightening, you don’t know what to do, how to protect yourselves and to feel safe.”

No one was injured and police continue to investigate, looking for two men. And they’re not sure what was used to break the window, because nothing was recovered from inside. The synagogue is making plans to increase security with cameras.
