NEW YORK- Transit officials and a group of engineers are touring the East River Tunnels to determine if Amtrak can use the "L" train repair plan for restoration projects.
The "L" train repair plan allows trains to stay in service because power cords are installed on racks instead of inside tunnel walls.
Rebuilding the East River Tunnels will affect riders who use Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and the Long Island Rail Road.
Amtrak riders say they are open to anything that will cause the least disruptions.
"I think it would be a terrible thing if they had to shutdown more tunnels. The frequency of rides makes things more convenient for me and people that I know," said one LIRR rider.
"Anything to avoid it because it is the delay of the day, everyday," said another LIRR rider.
Friday's tour is a preliminary review. Amtrak officials say repairs aren't scheduled to start for the next two years.
