NEW YORK - Over a dozen injuries were reported at the scene of a smokey six-alarm fire in the East Village early Wednesday morning.

The FDNY says flames broke out just after 2 a.m. on the first floor of a five-story building located at 188 First Avenue.

Witnesses at the scene tell NY1 it appears the fire started on the first floor of the building which housed a sushi restaurant.

Eleven firefighters and three civilians are among the injured.

All of the injuries are said to be minor.

A total of five buildings in the area were evacuated as firefighters tried their best to fight the flames from outside.

A partial roof collapse prevented the FDNY from getting inside. For safety purposes they were stuck outside dousing it with water.

The Red Cross says six families were displaced by the fire.

Due to the smoke and traffic delays in the area, PS19 Asher Levy Campus and East Side Community HS are closed for the day.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
