RAIN IMPACTS CLEANUP EFFORTS

The rainfall in New York City on Saturday night may have actually helped wash toxins off buildings in Manhattan following a steam pipe explosion earlier this week — although officials said the challenge would be to contain the materials.

Con Edison had private contractors in the area, power-washing asbestos off dozens of buildings near the site of the rupture in the Flatiron District.

Saturday's rain was expected to wash the debris off the buildings near the explosion site. Crews were working to catch the debris that washes off the buildings and streets using berms or embankments.

"In a way, it is going to help. It will wash those buildings down that have asbestos on it now," said Joseph Esposito, commissioner of NYC Emergency Management. "The problem is catching that debris and making it safe."

Crews said the next step was to vacuum up all the washed off contaminants.

HUNDREDS DISPLACED BY THE EXPLOSION

More than a dozen people were injured due to the steam pipe burst early Thursday morning.

It happened just before 7 a.m. on Fifth Ave. near 21st St.

More than 40 buildings were evacuated, displacing more than 400 people.

There were no major injuries.

Officials have not confirmed what caused the explosion.
