MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- A viral video on Facebook shows a girl injured from an possible, apparent shark attack at Myrtle Beach.

Cristy Torres posted the video, saying that the attack happened on July 2.

At the time of publishing, the video had received more than 2 million views.

It is unknown if the girl was actually bit by a shark or something else. 

Worldwide, there are 50–70 documented shark attacks per year.

To prevent shark attacks:

  • Stay in groups when swimming in water where sharks live.
  • Don't go too far from shore.
  • Don't go in if you have an open wound or are menstruating.
  • Avoid water where there are fishermen chumming, large schools of fish, or sewage disposal.
  • Be extra careful around sandbars or dropoffs.
  • Do not go in the water with a pet.
  • Avoid excessive splashing.
  • Avoid going in the water after dark or during twilight hours, when sharks are most active.
  • Avoid wearing shiny jewelry in the water.
