All apartment buildings in the city will need to have self-closing doors installed by 2021 under new fire safety legislation.
The bills were passed by the City Council months after a fire in the Bronx that killed 12 people.
The December fire was started by a toddler who was playing with a stove.
The flames spread quickly after he and his family left their apartment door open as they ran out.
The new law also calls for landlords to provide stove knob covers in all apartments with children under six years old.
