Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan closes Monday for some serious renovations.
The $98 million project is expected to take two years to complete.
The historic building will be mostly closed to visitors in that time.
The plan is to improve access for the disabled and restore stained glass windows.
Gender neutral bathrooms will also be added.
Church officials say the facelift is long overdue. The last time Trinity was renovated was in 1946.
"Our architects tell us that you should probably do a pretty serious restoration work every 30 years or so - that puts us about two and a half cycles behind," said Reverend Phillip A. Jackson.
A small chapel and the church's graveyard will remain open throughout the construction.
Trinity Church is more than 300 years old.
