While it might look like R2-D2, a new kind of security is patrolling LaGuardia Airport.
The Knightscope K5 is a five-foot, 400-pound robot that's been patrolling the terminal for three months and is paid privately.
The LaGuardia Gateway Partnership, which runs Terminal B, isn’t revealing exactly what information it’s collecting, but says the robot is not controlled by humans.
“The security robot is really here to be another set of eyes and ears in the terminal," said Tracy Sandford, director of marketing and communications with LaGuardia Gateway Partners. "We’re testing it out here on the arrivals level. It is geofenced, so it has the ability to patrol back and forth. It has the ability to do things, for example, to do a live announcement if we needed to alert passengers of something."
The LaGuardia Gateway Patnership says to its knowledge, the robot is the first of its kind.
The K5 is still in the testing phase.
