A 74-year-old NYPD Medal of Valor has been found a long way from home.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Lori Kline was shopping in a thrift store in Akron, Ohio when she discovered the coveted medal inside a bag of mixed jewelry.
Police said the medal was awarded to Officer John J. Morrissey, who died in the line of duty in 1934.
Lieutenant Steven Jerome was doing research on Officer Morrissey after Morrissey's only son died in 2015 and left a portion of his estate to the Chaplains Unit.
Jerome, who heads up the unit, was trying to find a next of kin to thank for the donation, when he saw a post by Kline on the NYPD Blue Angels website.
It is not clear how it ended up in the thrift store.
NYPD Lieutenant Robert Lee is slated to go to Ohio next week to retrieve the medal.
If no family members of Morrissey can be found, the Akron Beacon Journal reports, it will be given a place of honor at police headquarters.
