NEW YORK - With just over a week to go until Election Day, Mayor Bill de Blasio's challenger reacted Friday to his controversy over pay-to-play politics.
While testifying in the corruption trial of former jail guard union boss Norman Seabrook, Jona Rechnitz - one of de Blasio's biggest donors - said he gave the mayor's campaign $100,000 in exchange for favors.
Federal authorities previously investigated the allegations and brought no charges against the mayor.
But Republican candidate Nicole Malliotakis wants the state to reopen those investigations.
In an interview on "Mornings On 1" on NY1, she says de Blasio has shown he cannot be trusted.
"The spirit and the intent of the law was defied. That's what the D.A. said at the time. Is that what we want in a mayor? Someone who is looking for that little loophole to get around the law or do we want someone who has a moral compass who's going to do what's right for the people of this city and put them first," Malliotakis said.
Malliotakis also says she believes she can upset de Blasio on Election Day if enough New Yorkers turn out.
The general election is on November 7.
