New York is lending a helping hand to veterans who want to become farmers.

The state has unveiled a new grant program that helps former military service members buy and improve farm equipment.

The initiative is tied to a broader $1 million grant program for new- and early-stage farmers.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the move will help beef up a major sector of the state's economy and help veterans make the transition into the agriculture industry.
