BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- This week marks 6 years since the devastating flood of 2011 ravaged parts of the Southern Tier.
In 2006, the entire first floor of Lourdes Hospital was destroyed by a "100-year" flood, forcing the hospital to evacuate, moving 150 patients. But just 5 years later, another flood hit the region, this time bringing more water than before.
Luckily, the hospital had constructed a flood wall. At its highest point on Sept. 8, 2011, the water was just a few feet from coming over that wall. Luckily, the hospital was protected.
Thanks to those efforts, hospital operations continued as normal in 2011.
