Police are investigating several shootings they said happened near the West Indian Day Parade and J'Ouvert festivities between Sunday night and Monday, one of which left a man dead.
The most recent one happened Monday near the parade route on Eastern Parkway, according to the city police department. They said a man, who is expected to survive, was shot once in his torso.
Several other shootings happened in close proximity to where the J'Ouvert festival was scheduled to kick off in Brooklyn, officials said. The festival started at 6 a.m. Monday.
Police said they responded to one scene at Herkimer Place near Nostrand Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 8:48 p.m. Sunday.
They said a 49-year-old man was found with a gunshot to the head. He was later declared dead at a local hospital.
Just after midnight Monday, a shooting took place at Schenectady Ave. and St John's Place in Crown Heights.
A 44-year-old man was shot in the chest, according to police, and was taken to a hospital.
Also in Crown Heights, around 5 a.m. Monday, a 38-year-old man was shot in the chest, and a bullet grazed a 34-year-old man's leg, near Union St. and Utica Ave. The men are in stable condition.
As of now, none of the shootings have been directly linked to the festivities. No arrests have been made.
A Gov. Andrew Cuomo aide, Carrey Gabay, was shot and killed at J'Ouvert in 2015.
Two people were killed at the event last year, which led to heightened security this year, including police checkpoints, a delayed start, and additional lighting.
