For the first time in its almost 62 year history, an all boys Catholic school in Flushing will start accepting female students.

Holy Cross High School will start accepting 9th grade girls in the fall of 2018.

The school's president says the Holy Cross Board of Directors had talked about the issue for a long time, and finally made the move in a recent vote.

He says most students are excited about the news.

"And it makes sense for us to follow our founder's mission. When he said in 1856 that the art of education is bringing young people to completeness, notice he didn't say young men or young women. He said young people, "said Holy Cross High School President Michael Truesdell.

The school is also expanding its Science, Theology, Robotics, Engineering, Art, and Math initiative -- called "STREAM" thanks to a one million dollar gift from an alumnus.
