POINT SALUBRIOUS, N.Y. -- Lake Ontario water levels are at heights never seen before. But did you know that's only part of the reason there's so much flooding?
What was it like Monday night on Point Salubrious in Jefferson County? Winds were so strong, waves were not only crashing up against a break wall on County Route 125, but the water also flooded the road. The road was closed for a bit, but has opened back up.
It's wind creating waves that is causing major headaches for property owners and rescue crews trying to slow down flooding. Different wind directions cause issues in different areas, and crews are doing their best to keep up.
"The lake is up almost 3 feet in some cases, but that storm-driven wave, it can come across the lake and you're getting 3, 4, 5-foot wave run up," said Dave White of the New York Sea Grant. "We need to be continuing to help those folks protect their property and be ready for that to occur."
The volunteers say that's exactly what they'll be doing for as long as needed.
