Mayor DeBlasio says he has no intention of opening a new jail on Staten Island, calming the fears of local elected officials who spoke out against any new jail facility in the borough.

It all comes as the Mayor announced he wants to close Rikers Island within 10-years.

An Independent Commission recommended building several smaller jails throughout the city to take its place.

That led to concerns that Staten Island may house one of the new jails.  But the Mayor Squashed that idea at a news conference Monday.

"We know that very few of our inmates come from Staten Island. I want to see this move forward and I want to figure out the fewest possible locations that allow us to get off Rikers Island and Staten Island doesn't really play a strategic role in that," said DeBlasio.

The plan to close Rikers is based on the city cutting the number of people incarcerated to 5-thousand.  Half of what it is today.
