AUSTIN, Texas -- Imagine traveling through a maze of catacomb-like tunnels then emerging at the first of nearly two dozen 25 ton, 20 foot tall floodgates.
It's a sight very few see: we're inside Mansfield Dam, the tallest dam in the Lone Star State.
Serving primarily as the flood control reservoir of the Highland Lakes, Lake Travis, which is created and bound by Mansfield Dam, provides a fresh water supply, electricity, and a great spot to play for the Texas Hill Country and greater Austin area.
At LCRA Meteorologist Day 2017, we got a rare glimpse inside the powerhouse and dam itself in the midst of a multi-year refurbishment project.
In the above video, we get up close to the floodgates at the heart of the dam's operation.
