NEW YORK - Amtrak officials on Thursday unveiled plans for repairs at Penn Station, which has seen its share of accidents and delays in recent months.
The biggest undertaking is the replacement of several tracks and switches.
That will start next month, with some of the work lasting until June of next year.
It will also require track closures and schedule changes, although some of the repairs will only affect weekend commutes.
Amtrak's plan follows a series of recent transit problems at Penn Station, including two derailments over the past few weeks that led to days of service disruptions.
Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman says these incidents show just how necessary repairs have become.
"The events of the past month have shown we just need to step up our game there. We have to get in and accelerate a renewal program which was scheduled to stretch out over another two or three years and get that work done more quickly. And that is out intention," Moorman added.
Other Amtrak plans include a review of the coordination between the concourses inside Penn and the assembly of a security task force with both law enforcement and railroad officials.
