WASHINGTON – Firefighters were called to a blaze at the historic Watergate complex Wednesday afternoon.

A fire broke out inside a vacant 13th-floor unit at Watergate South, a cooperative apartment complex. Flames could be seen pouring from an apartment window. The apartment building was evacuated as crews battled the fire.

The fire was quickly knocked down, but firefighters stayed on site for some time clearing smoke that had spread to several surrounding floors.

No injuries were reported; a cause remains under investigation.

The Watergate complex includes the famed hotel and office building which was the site of the 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

The hotel, which reopened to the public in 2016, was not affected by the fire.
