AUSTIN, Texas — White-tail deer hunting season opens Saturday and that means an increase in the number of animals crossing roadways.

Twice as many motorists are killed in vehicle collisions with wild animals in Texas than any other state.  There will be more deer crossing roadways this month as hunting season begins Saturday, which means drivers need to be on alert.

"Last time I was driving in the hill country I had a deer coming my way. I just slowed down and luckily it stopped right at the roadway,” said Mark Hanna, of the Insurance Council of Texas.

But often times, deer and other animals don't stop. They bolt in front of vehicles and here in Texas, they cause a lot of collisions.

"The numbers are pretty staggering when you think about 10,000 a year or so in the state of Texas," said Mark Cross, of TxDOT.

According to TxDOT, there were 37 reported fatal crashes involving animals last year. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that's twice as many as any other state. Experts say Texas' size may contribute to the higher number.

"Texas is a large state and we have a lot of wildlife and we have a lot of motorists on the roadway," said Hanna.

Experts say it's crucial  this time of year to stay focused and wear your seat belt. They also say if a deer runs in your path, do not swerve.

"The recommendation is not to swerve because that obviously poses more risk to the motorist, the driver. So you want to try to keep the car as steady as possible," said Cross.

If you do end up hitting a deer, pull over, put your flashers on and call 911. Experts say as long as you have comprehensive coverage, your auto insurance should cover the damage.
