NEW YORK - The city is reportedly spending more money than ever to fight homelessness, but the number of people living in shelters is still going up.
The Wall Street Journal reports the de Blasio administration has increased spending on homeless services to a record $1.6 billion this year.
This while the shelter population is up by nearly 20 percent since the Mayor took office in 2014.
The paper reports more than 60,000 people stayed in shelters last week, including more than 23,000 children.
Official counts show a 12 percent drop in the number of people living on the streets in the city.
Advocates for the homeless are disputing those figures, and say more permanent and supportive housing for the homeless is key to solving the crisis.
The city has committed to building 15,000 units of supportive housing over the next 15 years.
