VESTAL, N.Y. -- This week is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, and Binghamton University students are spreading the word.

More than 50 students came out to an event to raise awareness.

They participated in a panel discussion about the impacts of homelessness, particularly among youth.

They also watched a documentary following the life of a homeless teenager.

Organizers say the event helps students learn how they can get involved and help families who are at extreme risk of homelessness.

"It has to be a collaborative effort and everything from street outreach and making sure we're identifying the youth and the families experiencing homelessness all the way to permanent support of housing," said Rebecca Rathmell, Southern Tier Homeless Coalition coordinator.

During the event, students also held a collection drive.

Items donated will go to the Southern Tier Homeless Coalition to distribute to people at risk of homelessness.
