An ongoing investigation in incidents at the Midstate Correctional Facility in July has led to two more Midstate Correctional Facility employees, a lieutenant and a sergeant, being placed on administrative leave.
Earlier this month, the prison's superintendent and deputy superintendent of security were placed on administrative leave.
Officials say on July 3, the New York State Police and Office of Special Investigations began an immediate investigation into the injury of a Midstate corrections officer. A dorm search was conducted, which led to separate allegations of staff misconduct. Those claims are also under investigation.
Department of Corrections Spokesperson Thomas Mailey said in a statement, "DOCCS will not tolerate any wrongdoing that puts the safety of its facilities at risk, and will not hesitate to pursue disciplinary charges or refer cases for criminal prosecution if warranted."
The New York Times reports that more than 30 prisoners were beaten and stomped on by the corrections officers during the dorm search, breaking many of the inmates' ribs. The inmates were threatened to keep quiet and not seek medical attention. The article says a notice of intent to sue has been filed on behalf of 32 inmates.
A spokesperson from NYSCOPBA, the union representing the prison's correction officers, said in a statement, "As with previous unsubstantiated allegations made by convicted felons, it is more prudent to allow the investigation to be completed so we know all of the facts."
