AUSTIN, Texas - Soon, you might be able to head to Lady Bird Lake to jog, kick a ball and work.
Austin's Parks and Recreation Board endorsed plans to explore adding Wi-Fi to Town Lake Metropolitan Park, including Vic Mathias Shores. The city already has Wi-Fi in parts of Zilker Park.
Board Member Rick Cofer introduced the idea, which received an 8-1 vote in favor.
"We've got 300+ days of sunshine a year," Cofer said. "We want people out in our parks. Let's provide internet, so folks can work, they can play, they can take advantage of our beautiful downtown parks."
This could create opportunities for people to work away from their office, and it would allow kids to play interactive computer games.
"You're not limited to sitting in your bedroom or at your kitchen table and losing your mind in a dark room when you have a beautiful day like this," Austin resident Noah Nuñez said.
Nuñez is a student at St. Edward's University. He visits the park at least once a week to practice soccer. He said the addition of Wi-Fi would attract him to the park daily.
"The two crown jewels of the park system are Zilker and Auditorium Shores," Cofer said. "Let's take care of those parks, and make sure they have the resources and amenities that people are demanding."
Cofer said the Dallas suburb of Plano has Wi-Fi in most of its parks, covering more than 4,000 acres of green space.
The plan heads to the Austin City Council for further consideration.
