CHARLOTTE—Food Lion is stepping up their stake in the war over grocery store market share in Charlotte.
The Salisbury-based company is finishing up remodeling more than 140 Charlotte area stores.
Food Lion President Meg Ham says changes like walk-in vegetable coolers, expanded beer and wine sections and new customer service training will help them compete.
“It's just the feel of our stores. I think it's a very welcoming feel. Another [addition] is the associates and the training that we do with those associates, the environment that we work in to create that level of comfort, that level of intimacy to know your customers, and to do what's right for the customer that's standing right in front of you,” she said.
The three top grocery chains in Charlotte, Harris Teeter, Food Lion and Walmart, all lost market share last year to Publix according to analysts at Chain Store Guide.
Their latest report also shows about the Charlotte market also added about 10 percent more stores in the last year.
