Upstate New York's New Area Code: 838

The new area code assigned to upstate New York will be 838.

This comes after the commission was advised that the supply of numbers within the 518 area code would run out no later than 2019.

The new 838 area code will be activated in 2017. Existing phone users won't have to change their numbers, but eventually, new phone users will get the new area code. 

The 838 area code will be used in 17 counties in Eastern Upstate New York, including the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.
