Food Bank for NYC is encouraging New Yorkers to "Go Orange to End Hunger."
The event is aimed at raising awareness about the one in five New Yorkers who rely on Food Bank programs and services.
The group says it plans to give out 20,000 meals to low-income city residents this week and 500,000 meals this month.
Organizers say their choice to hold this event in Brooklyn was no accident.
"We found that Brooklyn among the other boroughs is experiencing a high level of food insecurity and a growing meal gap," said Francisco Tezen, Vice President of Fundraising for the food bank. "We have the opportunity to raise awareness in this citywide call to action through Food Bank for New York City Go Orange to End Hunger in collaboration with our partners at Barilla to raise awareness around the issue but more importantly to really galvanize New Yorkers and today Brooklynites to say everyone has a role to play in the fight to end hunger in New York City."
