TROY, N.Y. -- For 100 years the Troy lock and dam have served communities along the Hudson.
Friday, a celebration was held there to mark 100 years.
The Army Corps of Engineers has overseen its operation, facilitating commerce and recreation on the river, since it opened in 1916.
The lock and dam serves as a gateway to the New York State canal system, and is the first lock boaters pass through when travelling north on the Hudson.
"When you mark a centennial celebration like this, really what it marks is all the years of development, commerce and taking care of the local community,” said Col. David Caldwell, Army Corps of Engineers.
The Army Corps of Engineers says $6 billion worth of commerce comes through the dam each year.
