Students with special needs got a lesson in bicycle safety on Thursday at P.S. 56.
Richmond University Medical Center hosted a course on bicycle helmets at the school for children taking part in the Extended School Year program.
Students learned about the importance of protecting their heads through interactive activities and demonstrations.
"Visualizing what could really happen to your brain will really make these children understand what will happen to them if they fall off a bike or off a scooter without wearing a helmet," said Christina Youssef, the manager of the Pediatric Trauma Program at RUMC.
"Not only will they learn it, but maybe they can teach their younger brothers and sisters and teach them the importance of helmet safety," said Sean Flannery, a teacher at P.S. 56.
After the lesson, each participant went home with a fitted helmet.
