CHARLOTTE -- A self-proclaimed medicine man pleaded guilty Wednesday to tax evasion and weapons charges.
In a hearing that lasted about 20 minutes, 44-year-old Reuben Dehaan answered a series of yes or no questions, told the judge he didn't have anything else to say, then signed a plea agreement.
Prosecutors say between 2008 and 2014, Dehaan made $2.7 million from his holistic medicine business, but he had set up several straw companies and bank accounts to avoid paying income tax.
The FBI also says they found an extensive gun collection, one of them illegally modified and not registered.
Now that he's pleaded guilty, he faces a maximum of a five-year sentence on the tax evasion charge and 10 years on the weapons charge.
His attorney Melissa Owen said Dehaan will also cooperate with the IRS and sort out his tax situation.
"He will be filing his taxes, and he looks forward to returning home to be with his loving family," said Owen.
His attorney says it could be about three to six months before Dehaan is sentenced.
