The essence of Harlem is now in Hamilton, Bermuda's capital city, thanks to restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson, the owner of New York City’s Red Rooster.
"A little island flair, a little uptown flair -- Bermuda is the place to be," said Samuelsson.
Samuelsson recently opened his first island outpost, the restaurant "Marcus," at the iconic Hamilton Princess.
"We have an open kitchen just like we do in Harlem, and getting this idea about from New York to Bermuda only takes two hours, I can see a lot of people doing that trip."
Samuelsson is recruiting staff from the island of Manhattan to help incorporate native flavors, including Herb Wilson, now the Executive Chef at Marcus.
"We have a connection to all the different communities here; local fishermen, local farmers. It definitely works," said Wilson.
At a recent grand opening party for the hotel's $100 million renovation, Harlem jazz great Nate Lucas performed for the invited guests.
"Bermuda reminds me so much of Harlem because it’s such a tight knit community,” said Lucas. Everyone is like a celebrity here because everybody's yelling each other's name as they're walking around."
For Marcus Samuelson, one particular feature even outshines his own celebrity.
"The water is really the big star, so we make sure that we have windows, and we lowered the balconies so every seat in the house has ocean views," he said.
