In time for Father's Day this weekend, some local dads are setting a good example for their kids.
A group of fathers, their kids and other volunteers spent the day preparing packages at the Food Bank for New York City's warehouse.
Organizers say 1 in 5 of the city kids rely on soup kitchens and food pantries for regular meals.
They say the need is greater during the summer because kids are not getting their meals at school.
"Just fathers giving up their time not to only help their children, but help other children throughout the five boroughs. So that's extremely important," said Daryl Gardner, director of food distribution for the Food Bank for NYC.
“There's a lot of kids in this city that don't have fathers, and that really just contributes to a lot of things that are bad, and I wanted the kids to appreciate, not only myself being here, but that they can learn that they're helping other children in the community,” said Emilio Good, manager of the Food Bank for NYC.
“It's incredibly important because we have 1.4 million New Yorkers who depend on our soup kitchens and food pantries across the five boroughs of New York City," said Lisa Hines-Johnson, chief operating officer of the Food Bank for NYC.
