More than two million people around the world have pledged to lace up their shoes and hit the streets for Global Running Day.

Here in the city, New York Road Runners is hosting a variety events, including open runs across the five boroughs starting at 7 p.m.

One of the goals of Global Running Day is to get a million children around the world to take part.

So far, about 700,000 kids have pledged to participate.

But ultimately, organizers say the event is about making sure everyone gets a little exercise, no matter their age or skill level.

"Running is essential to pretty much everything you do. We really emphasize that with the kids. Kids runs for all their sports, soccer, baseball, football. So we figure we can get them out there running and get them fit to help them with all their other sports," said NYRR President and CEO Michael Capiraso.

"Movement is what it's about, get out there. We have all ages and abilities out there today," said NYRR President of Events Peter Ciaccia.
