State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is calling for a national recall of a jewelry making kit that's sold in toy stores across the state.
Officials say the "Cra-Z-Art" Kit made by LaRose Industries has been found to have high levels of lead.
Schneiderman is urging the federal government to issue a national recall.
Officials say in some cases, the toys had lead ten times over the federal limit.
The toys have been sold at stores in the city, as well as Long Island and upstate.
Schneiderman says toy makers need to change their policies to keep kids safe.
"Our message to the industry is clear, don't put children at risk, take responsibility for this problem and improve your systems to keep toxic toys from children," the Attorney General said.
The attorney general's is also opening an investigation into how the toys made it to toy shelves in New York.
We've reached out to LaRose Industries for comment.
